30 Days Wild: Day 30

30 Days Wild: Day 30
June Rainfall

I have a rain gauge in my garden and have been monitoring the rainfall for the whole of June. I'm not sure if we've had more than the usual amount of rain for the month compared to other years.
I have checked the rain at the same time everyday and I realise that June doesn't end until midnight, but at least it has stopped raining at the moment!

June had a total of 113.81mm of rain, which averages to 3.8mm of rain per day.

Toes in Wet Grass

I went outside with bare feet to feel the grass in the rain and to wriggle my toes in the wet grass. (It's Wimbledon, so it was bound to rain at some point!)

Bee Tote Bag

I'm currently watching the tennis on TV, so today I painted this tote bag.

Just in case it's unrecognisable, it's a bumble bee on a flower!

30 Days Wild: Day 27   Along a Towpath

As I was visiting my mum I thought I would take advantage of a walk along the towpath of the Basingstoke Canal. I am very familiar with the canal as I grew up so close to it.

I love any body of water, and I enjoyed my short walk along it today.

The bridge over the canal is also a habitat for plants.

 Bees collecting

I think this plant has escaped from a garden, but the bees seem to like it!

 I'm ready for my close-up!

Gadgets Off

My random act of wildness for Sunday 26th June is to not use any gadgets.

Because of that, this needs to be posted before midnight on 25th!

Up the Wall

As I have said in a previous post it always amazes me the way plants can take advantage of any crevice or surface.

This wall is going north out of Petworth in Surrey.

30 Days Wild: Day 24
Green Woodpecker (finally!)

I have been trying to get a picture of the Green Woodpecker that I hear periodically out at the front of my house.
I often hear it making it's warning calls, but by the time I get out my camera, all I see is it's tail as it flies away from me.

Today I caught it on the ground and I finally managed a photo! It is quite zoomed in, but I'm pleased with it.

Wildlife Camera

I have had a camera in my garden for a while now and I try to check it daily.

So this morning I checked what may have been captured in the last 24 hours. I was expecting to find a hedgehog picture as my garden is on a hedgehog route and I often see one in my hedgehog feeding station.
But I captured this.
It's a fox, right? Can they climb as I have a completely enclosed garden?

Following a Watercourse

I have a brook or stream that runs near my home. Or it could be just a ditch for runoff from the South Downs. I think it runs into the Northbrook eventually, but it doesn't show on Googlemaps, so I'm not sure!

Whatever it is, at times it has water in it. I love water features, so I thought I'd take some photos of it and follow it through my estate.

Wildlife at a Wildlife Centre

The challenge for today was to see if I could find wildlife that was not caged at a wildlife center.

I had the day off (as it is my birthday) and so my family and I went to Tilgate Park in Crawley (near Gatwick).

I saw a Heron, a family of Coots, a rabbit and a squirrel (in a rubbish bin).

I also saw a poster that was advertising 30 Days Wild!

Spider in the Shower

Got a bit stuck at home today (rain didn't help!)

But, some wildlife came in to see me. I found this lady in my shower. I didn't even feel watched as she stayed up in her corner.

I know she is a common house spider, but I think she's amazing!

Looking at Seaweed

Another trip to the beach. My plan was to look for anything in the pools of water left behind by the receding tide. Unfortunately, we don't have rock pools in Worthing!

So I looked at the seaweed. There are 2 photos of the seaweed still on the beach as I only picked up seaweed that was loose, if it was attached to a rock, then I left it in place.

Up in the Trees

I thought that most of the time I look down or straight ahead. Today I decided to look up and specifically up into the tree canopy.

I saw a Grey Squirrel, Wood Pigeon and a Blackbird. Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of any of them.

Quite a stunning view!

Wild Weather

We had the most amazing storm today. I took advantage and went out in it. The rain was so heavy that there was a river outside my house. We also had thunder and lightning.

I took this video, I think it demonstrates the power of the storm.

Sorry, I couldn't get it to embed here!

Update: We had 24mm rain in less than 12 hours!

Garden Grasses

I  have most of my garden growing wild. So at this time of year the grasses are tall and going to seed.

While I was studying them today, I thought how pretty they are. In the photos some look quite pink!
